The Fall Equinox occurred this past Sunday, which marked the first day of Autumn. In many ancient cultures, this was a time to celebrate the harvest and to give thanks. In Ayurveda, Autumn is the beginning of Vata season. The qualities of Vata are cold, dry, light, rough, and mobile. These qualities affect the world around you as well as your body and mind. In nature the days are getting shorter and colder and sometimes windy (mobile). Your skin can become dry and rough, the extremities may become cold, and your mind can be scattered or anxious. To stay warm, moist, and calm, cozy up with a mug of Pumpkin Spice Latte.
Ingredients:
1 cup milk or milk alternative such as almond milk
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
1 teaspoon of Pumpkin Spice (or make your own with ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg and a pinch of ground cloves)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Sweetener of your choice
Directions:
Heat the milk in a pot over low heat until it almost simmers.
Remove from the heat and add in the remining ingredients.
With an immersion blender, blend on a high speed until it’s smooth. (If you don’t’ have an immersion blender, transfer milk to a blender, add in the other ingredients, and blend on high until the drink is smooth.)
Pour into your favorite mug and sprinkle with more pumpkin spice or add a cinnamon stick. You could also add a dollop of whipped cream.
Relax, sip and enjoy!
